An overload of strategies, policy papers and consultations was published by the government last week ahead of the COP26. The most prominent amongst them was the long-awaited Net Zero Strategy which has been well publicised. We’d like to share with you a summary of other relevant documents which have not been given as much limelight.

STRATEGIES

Net-zero ‘Build Back Greener’ Strategy
This strategy sets out policies and proposals for decarbonising all sectors of the UK economy to meet our net zero target by 2050.

Heat and Buildings Strategy
This strategy outlines how the UK will decarbonise our homes, and our commercial, industrial and public sector buildings, as part of setting a path to net zero by 2050.

Net Zero Review
The Net Zero Review is an analytical report that uses existing data to explore the key issues as the UK decarbonises.

GOVERNMENT RESPONSES

Government response to the Climate Change Committee report on progress in adapting to climate change
This policy paper sets out the government’s response to the Climate Change Committee’s (CCC’s) report on progress in adapting to climate change and its recommendations on adaptation.

Response to CCC report on Progress in Reducing Emissions
This response refers to the Committee on Climate Change (CCC)’s annual report on progress in reducing UK emissions, assessing the government’s climate change mitigation activity.
The government response sets out our progress over the last 12 months and addresses the CCC’s recommendations in its June 2021 report.

CONSULTATIONS

Market-based mechanism for low carbon heat consultation
This open consultation seeks views on proposals to introduce a market-based mechanism to support the development of the UK market for low-carbon electric heat pumps.

Phasing out fossil heating off gas grid consultation
This consultation sets out proposals to phase out the installation of high carbon fossil fuel heating systems in homes off the gas grid, as committed to in the 2017 Clean Growth Strategy.

It follows our 2018 call for evidence on the future policy framework for decarbonising heat in buildings.

Phasing out the installation of fossil fuel heating systems in businesses and public buildings off the gas grid consultation

CONSULTATION RESPONSES

Consultation response to the Clean Heat Grant proposals
The government response to this consultation covers the Clean Heat Grant proposals within ‘Future support for low carbon heat’ consultation.
Having considered the responses the government intends to proceed with the scheme formally named the Clean Heat Grant and now known as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).

Consultation response on greenhouse gas removals (GGRs)
The government has published a consultation response to an earlier call for evidence on greenhouse gas removals which is part of a wider package of policy documents on GGRs published in conjunction with the net zero strategy.
