ESOS GOOD PRACTICE IN ACTION: PREPARING FOR PHASE 4, 1 October 2026, 14:00-16:00 (UK Time),  EMA Virtual Event

As organisations prepare for ESOS Phase 4, the focus is increasingly shifting from achieving compliance to using ESOS as a catalyst for better energy management and decarbonisation. This session brings together two leading organisations – the Co-operative Group and Ibstock – to share their practical experiences of embedding ESOS good practice across large and complex estates.

Through real world case studies, delegates will gain valuable insights into improving data quality, strengthening governance, engaging stakeholders and turning audit findings into meaningful energy and carbon reduction projects.

The workshop will offer an opportunity to ask questions.

14:05-14:00 – What ESOS Good Practice Means to Co-op Presentation and Q&A – Mike Greer, Head of Energy & Technical Services, The Co-operative Group

This presentation will explore what good practice in the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) means within the Co-op, drawing on key lessons from Phase 3 compliance and looking ahead to preparations for Phase 4.

The session will provide an overview of the Co-op’s Phase 3 findings and how these findings are being used to support ongoing energy management and decarbonisation activities.

Looking forward, the presentation will outline the Co-op’s approach to Phase 4 preparation, highlighting the progress made to date, the practical steps being taken to strengthen compliance, and how lessons learned from previous phases are informing current planning. Mike Greer, Head of Energy & Technical Services at The Co-operative Group Ltd will also reflect on what has worked well, the challenges encountered, and the strategies being adopted to address them.

15:00-15:55 – Beyond Compliance: Delivering ESOS Good Practice at Ibstock Presentation and Q&A – Richard Capper, Group Energy Manager, Ibstock plc & Director, Ensure Energy Consultancy

In this session, Ibstock’s Group Energy Manager and Director of Ensure Energy Consultancy – Richard Capper  – will share his experience of delivering ESOS across a large and diverse manufacturing business, demonstrating how the outcomes of Phase 3 have been used to support energy efficiency, carbon reduction and better decision-making across its operations.

The presentation will examine the practical journey towards Phase 4, including the systems, governance and stakeholder engagement needed to build a stronger compliance scheme. It will also explore the lessons learned from previous ESOS phases, the challenges encountered and the approaches that have proved most effective in turning audit findings into actionable projects.
