The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is pleased to announce the publication of a Call for Evidence on facilitating energy efficiency the electricity system, and the Electricity Demand Reduction (EDR) pilot final evaluation. They were part of a suite of energy related publications referred to in an Energy Update to Parliament on 22 July.

The Call for Evidence is seeking views, in particular from market participants, on barriers and opportunities for energy efficiency to contribute to flexibility in the electricity market. This should be enabled by technological developments including increasing automation, greater integration of plant and equipment, and improvements in monitoring and verification systems. This intends to build on the findings of the EDR pilot, designed to test the viability of energy efficiency in the Capacity Market, to improve the Department’s understanding of how new markets for energy efficiency can be created, thereby promoting private investment rather than relying on regulation and subsidy. The aim is to facilitate energy efficiency playing a role alongside distributed generation, storage and network reinforcement in a smarter and more flexible energy system.
